Today attended the one-day pre-conference workshop "Facilitation for Innovation : Inspiring Group Creativity" by Ann Epps and Hong Mi Chae.

This is beautiful combination of Design Thinking and Technology of Participation methods.

One of the most fascinating moment was when I experienced the "Mind Map Framing"! 4 groups were brainstorming the assumptions, examples, stakeholder perspectives and problem origin in four flip charts together,

Then we drew connections between similar aspects

And the facilitators asked the group to name the PROBLEM for each connected thread

When we the participants saw the connection, that was very powerful!

For the past few months, I had experienced bits and pieces of design thinking from different organisations, this one (with the combination of ICA ToP methods) was by far the most solid one. The reason being there had been solid ICA style of debrief, so it was not jumping from one activity to another, or the aim was not to get everyone very excited. Both Ann and Hong Mi were calm, and the energy in the room was light and reflective.

The program had been carefully crafted with questions and activities to get the participants ready for the next exercise (subtly) and with solid debrief so there is a closure. For example, all debrief had a participant- related debrief and a facilitator-related debrief.
